Guest Feature on the Mom & Mind Podcast: ADHD and Eating Disorders in the Perinatal Period
I recently had the opportunity to join the Mom & Mind podcast to talk about a topic that doesn’t get enough attention in perinatal mental health: the intersection of ADHD and eating disorders during pregnancy and postpartum.
In my work, I often see how these two experiences overlap. Both involve challenges with regulation - whether that’s emotions, impulses, routines, or body image - and the perinatal period can intensify those vulnerabilities. Sleep disruption, hormonal shifts, identity changes, and the loss of familiar structure can make symptoms more visible or harder to manage.
In this conversation, we discuss:
Why ADHD and eating disorders commonly co-occur
How pregnancy and postpartum transitions can affect symptoms
How dopamine and norepinephrine function in the ADHD brain and influence behavior, mood, and eating patterns
What compassionate, neurodiversity-informed treatment can look like
This is a topic I care deeply about, and it was meaningful to talk about it in a space dedicated to perinatal mental health. So many people struggle silently at this intersection, and increased awareness can make a real difference.
